Hairy St. John’s Wort. Jenny Le Beau
Jenny Le Beau photographed the Hairy St. John’s Wort. This is at first glance very similar to the more common Perforate St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum). Both plants have five petaled, yellow flowers and translucent dots on their leaves, however Hairy St. John’s Wort can be differentiated by it’s downy leaves which are much longer and strongly veined as well as the small black dots that appear on its sepals.
This plant is fairly widespread throughout Britain, but has a restricted distribution in Bexley, with Braeburn and neighbouring Crayford Rough the best sites in the borough for the species.
